WALTON COUNTY, Fla— Two are facing drug charges in Walton County after a traffic stop leads to the discovery of methamphetamine and fentanyl.
On Monday night, a deputy stopped a vehicle at State Highway 20 and Jefferson Street in Freeport. The registered owner of the car was known to drive with a suspended license.
The driver, Ramona May Hicks, 49, of Freeport, and the passenger, Johnny Ray Smith, 29, of Santa Rosa Beach, were detained during the stop.
While removing them from the vehicle, Smith was seen trying to hide something by rolling his wrist up into the sleeve of his shirt. A clear bag was removed with a clear crystal-like substance inside. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine.
During a search of the car, several needles were located. A brown glass vial was also found in the center console under the radio. Inside the vial was a dark brown substance, which tested positive for the presence of fentanyl.
While on the scene of the stop, Hicks was asked multiple times if she had anything in her body or on her person that would be considered contraband at the jail, and she told deputies multiple times that she didn’t.
During a search at the Walton County Jail, staff required Hicks to remove a hygiene product. When she did, Hicks attempted to flush the toilet but was stopped by jail staff. A yellow plastic bag was located in the toilet bowl with what appeared to be a hard crystal substance inside.
When the bag was brought into evidence, it was opened, and a large amount of clear-like crystals were located. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine, weighing 5.7 grams.
Both were charged with possession of fentanyl.
Smith was additionally charged with possession of methamphetamines and claimed ownership of the syringes located in the vehicle, so he was additionally charged with possession of paraphernalia.
Hicks was additionally charged with driving on a suspended license, possession of methamphetamines, introducing contraband into a county facility, and tampering with evidence.
