We truly hope all dogs go to heaven.
We are heartbroken to share the passing of “Drago”, a retired K-9 who served the Walton County community alongside Deputy Steven Tector.
Born April 13, 2012, in the Netherlands, K-9 Drago, a Dutch Shepherd, was a multi-purpose patrol canine certified in narcotics detection, criminal apprehension, tracking, and article recovery.
Drago began his career with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office on December 21, 2015, quickly proving himself an invaluable member of the K-9 Unit. His drive, intelligence, and loyalty made him both an exceptional working dog and a beloved companion.
In 2021, Drago was medically retired after being diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular disease known as Myasthenia Gravis, which causes muscle weakness and fatigue. Though no longer able to patrol, Drago enjoyed a well-earned retirement at home with Deputy Tector and his family and later, with K-9 Jax, Deputy Tector’s new partner.
After Drago’s retirement, Deputy Tector said one of his favorite things was watching his son interact and grow up with Drago by his side.
A short time ago, Drago received another grave diagnosis, cancer, which compounded his ongoing health challenges. This morning, Deputy Tector made the difficult decision to help Drago pass peacefully over the rainbow bridge.
Please keep Deputy Tector’s family in your thoughts today as they mourn the loss of their friend. The pain we feel is a small price for a lifetime of loyalty and love from these amazing animals.
Rest easy, Drago. You’ve earned your wings, sweet boy.
