This past Friday, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office had the privilege of welcoming a very special visitor through our doors.
A few years ago, John Ballard, a young man with special needs, met a deputy who left a lasting impression during a family visit to Walton County. That deputy was Will May. The two shared a moment that became something more, a friendship that stayed with John long after their first meeting. Deputy May gave John a WCSO baseball cap, and the two took a photo together, a snapshot of a connection that meant the world to them both.
Last week, John’s mother reached out with a simple request. They were coming back in town and hoped to stop by for a visit with Deputy May, and, if possible, replace John’s beloved green hat, which had been chewed up by their dog.
What the Ballard family didn’t yet know was that Deputy May had made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty just two months earlier. Though his absence is still deeply felt, his spirit and legacy live on, especially in moments like this.
So, when John arrived at WCSO on Friday afternoon, he wasn’t met by just one deputy; he was welcomed by many. Members of our team came together to honor Deputy May’s memory and ensure John felt the same warmth and friendship he had shared with his hero. And of course, he got a new WCSO ball cap, one they hope he treasures just as much as the first.
Will’s legacy of compassion and connection continues to inspire every single day.
John, your visit meant more than you know.
And Will, we hope you were smiling down on the reunion your kindness made possible.
