Mr. James A. Greathouse Sr., 70, passed away May 31, 2025. He was born on September 17, 1954 in Panama City, Florida ,to Wales A. and Martha Jean Hartzog Greathouse.
Mr. Greathouse was a resident of DeFuniak Springs, Florida. He was Baptist by faith. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, painting and drawing with his babies. James loved working with his hands, doing woodwork or tinkering with small engine repair but what he loved most in the world was his grandchildren. Any moment spent with them was always fun, loud, and something he held dear. He loved teasing them. He never missed an important event in their lives, he was always present and always their biggest cheerleader. He was a veteran of the Vietnam era, having served in the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps, having received the Expert Rifle Badge, Expert Pistol Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (3rd award), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (2nd award), Navy Unit Commendation, and Letter of Appreciation.
Mr. Greathouse was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William Greathouse and Howard Greathouse.
Mr. Greathouse is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pauline Greathouse of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, son James Greathouse Jr. and wife Catherine of Baker, Florida, son David Greathouse of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, daughter Diane Withrow and husband Matt of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, one brother, Michael D. Greathouse of Panama City, Florida, three “adopted” daughters, Rebecca Fisher of DeFuniak Springs, Jessica Brooks of DeFuniak Springs, and Natalie Anderson of DeFuniak Springs. Mr. Greathouse is survived by his grandchildren Matthew Greathouse and wife Jasmine, Emilie Greathouse, Ryan Graves, Haley Withrow, Brianna Withrow, Autumn Withrow, Haleigh Withrow, Mathew B. Withrow, Roen Greathouse, Angela Withrow, Logan Withrow, Aiden Withrow, Noah Withrow, Madilyn Withrow, Liam Garner, Kehlani Garner, Skylar Garner, and three great grandchildren, Cairo Greathouse, Sylvi Greathouse, and Everleigh Maneval. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews he loved dearly. Especially his girls Terry Ward Golightly and Elizabeth Ward.
A time of visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00 PM, Thursday, June 5, 2025 at Clary-Glenn Funeral Home Chapel; 230 Park Avenue, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32435.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, June 5, 2025 at Clary-Glenn Funeral Home Chapel; with Reverend Doug Hogg officiating.
Flowers are being accepted.
Pallbearers will be Matt Withrow, Benjamin Cosson, David Greathouse, James Greathouse Jr., Mathew ‘Bubba’ Withrow, and Matthew Greathouse.
Burial will be held at Southwide Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors by the United States Marine Corps.
