South Walton Fire District responded to a residential structure fire Tuesday, June 24, on Eve Circle in Point Washington.
The incident began at approximately 6:30 p.m. when a 911 caller reported to SWFD Dispatchers a two-story home was on fire.
First arriving crews from Engine 6 and Truck 2 confirmed the reports of heavy smoke and fire coming from the second story once they arrived on-scene. Crews then initiated a primary search and fire attack.
Additional crews arrived on-scene and deployed numerous hose lines to attack the fire, which was primarily located within the second story and attic space.
During a secondary search of the structure, firefighters located two cats in the master bedroom and brought them outside the home. They provided the animals with oxygen before reuniting them with the owners who took them to a local veterinary center for further evaluation.
Crews then continued working on-scene into the late evening mitigating hotspots in the home’s attic space.
Based on eyewitness reports, thunderstorms in the area at the time of the event, and the location of the fire in the attic space, the SWFD Fire Marshal determined a lightning strike could not be ruled out as the most likely cause.
SWFD thanks the responding Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies for the assistance at the scene and expresses its support for the impacted property owners moving toward.
